Heritage Hotels in Shekhawati
Shekhawati- Introduction
Known throughout the world as the open art gallery of
Rajasthan, Shekhawati is an invaluable contribution from the
Marwari traders of Rajasthan. A semi-arid region in
Rajasthan is famous for the colorfully painted mansions or
havelis known for its colorfully painted havelis (mansions)
that are commendable pieces of the great artistic tradition
of Shekhawati. Shekhawati could be translated in English as
'the land of Shekha's clan' - derived from the name of Rao
Shekha of Kachhwaha Dynasty of the 15th century. Shekhawati
extends over two large districts of Rajasthan namely,
Jhunjhunu and Sikar. Most of the famous havelis were
constructed between AD 1750 to AD 1930 by the large marwari
families. Later on, many of these families moved out of the
region due to consistent droughts and these great pieces of
architecture went into to neglect and started crumbling
before they were restored by the wealth marwari merchants
now residing outside. Many of these havelis later converted
into hotels that led to money flow and subsequent inflow of
money.
